Ram 1500's Hurricane Engine Wins Wards

The 3.0-litre Hurricane High Output Straight-Six Turbo engine, featured in the 2025 Ram 1500, has been named to the esteemed Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems List. This recognition marks the eighth consecutive year a Stellantis product has received this honour, highlighting the company's consistent excellence in propulsion systems.

Powerful Performance

The Hurricane H/O engine, standard in the 2025 Ram 1500 Tungsten, delivers an impressive 540 horsepower and 521 lb.-ft. of torque. This powerhouse is paired with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, optimizing fuel economy, performance, and drivability.

Micky Bly, Head of Global Propulsion Systems at Stellantis, stated, "We engineered our Hurricane twin turbo engines to be powerful, efficient, robust and versatile, delivering performance that enhances the driving experience both on- and off-road, and while towing."

Innovative Design

The Hurricane engine's design incorporates several cutting-edge technologies:

  • Twin low-inertia, high-flow turbochargers for rapid response
  • Plasma transfer wire arc coating for reduced friction
  • High-pressure direct fuel injection system
  • Engine-mounted water-to-air charge cooler

These innovations contribute to improved fuel economy and reduced emissions compared to the HEMI V-8 engine it replaces.

Bob Gritzinger, Wards editor-in-chief, noted, "The Hurricane High-Output Straight-Six Turbo packs a powerful punch from launch to well past legal speed, while also delivering promised fuel economy that represents an improvement over the HEMI V-8 it replaces."

Engine Options and Manufacturing

The 2025 Ram 1500 offers two Hurricane Twin Turbo engine options: the Standard Output and High Output 3.0-litre engines. Both are manufactured at Stellantis' Saltillo Engine Plant in Mexico.

Future-Focused Strategy

This engine development aligns with Stellantis' "Dare Forward 2030" strategic plan, which focuses on powertrain flexibility to meet global customer needs. The company aims to achieve carbon net-zero status by 2038, demonstrating its commitment to innovative, clean mobility solutions.
